What's your AC doing?
Check at least one symptom above to see the likely diagnosis.
Six failures we see every summer.
01
Capacitor failure
The most common AC failure in Alabama. Stores the kick needed to start the compressor. Degrades faster in heat — 7-12 year life typical.
02
Refrigerant leak
Low refrigerant means low cooling and a frozen coil. Refrigerant doesn't get used up — if it's low, there's a leak. Find and fix the leak before topping off.
03
Frozen evaporator coil
Restricted airflow (dirty filter, blocked return) or low refrigerant freezes the coil solid. System runs but doesn't cool. Shut it off and thaw before restart.
04
Condensate drain clog
Algae and biofilm clog the 3/4" drain line. Water backs up into the drain pan, then onto ceilings or floors. Alabama humidity makes this an annual issue.
05
Contactor failure
The electrical switch that connects the compressor to power. Pits and welds shut, or contacts burn open. Often paired with capacitor failure.
06
Blower motor failure
Indoor fan motor bearings seize or the motor windings burn open. The system calls for cooling but no air moves through the ducts.
Emergency questions, answered straight.
My AC is blowing warm air — what's wrong?+
Three likely causes: (1) outdoor condenser breaker tripped — check the disconnect by the unit; (2) capacitor failed — common after 7-12 years in Alabama heat; (3) refrigerant leak — the system can't cool with low charge. Stop running the system to prevent compressor damage. Call (205) 994-6402.
My AC is making a loud noise — should I shut it off?+
Yes. Grinding, screeching, or banging means mechanical failure — failing blower bearing, loose fan blade, or compressor failure. Continuing risks total compressor destruction. A humming with no fan motion is a seized motor or bad capacitor. Shut it off and call (205) 994-6402.
My AC drain pan is leaking — is this an emergency?+
Yes, if water is reaching ceiling drywall, flooring, or electrical components. A clogged drain or cracked pan can cause thousands in water damage within hours. Shut off the AC, place a bucket under the dripping coil if accessible, and call us.
My AC breaker keeps tripping — what's going on?+
A breaker that trips repeatedly is a safety system doing its job. Likely causes: shorted compressor windings, failed capacitor causing high amp draw, dirty condenser coil, or undersized breaker. Do NOT keep resetting — that risks fire. Call us — we test amp draw under load.
How fast can After Hours HVACR get to me?+
We dispatch 24/7 across the Birmingham metro from our Hoover base. Actual arrival depends on current queue, distance, and weather. We commit to a real licensed technician — not a call-center promise. Call (205) 994-6402 for current dispatch status.
Should I try to fix my AC myself before calling?+
Safe checks: confirm thermostat is on COOL and set below room temp; check air filter (replace if clogged, wait 30 min); confirm breakers are on; clear debris from outdoor condenser. Do NOT open the outdoor cabinet, touch capacitors (they hold charge), or add refrigerant — EPA Section 608 certification required.
Is a failed AC a real emergency in Birmingham summer?+
Yes. Birmingham summer days hit 95°F+ with 70°F+ dewpoint. Indoor heat index in an un-cooled home can exceed 110°F within hours. For elderly residents, infants, or heat-sensitive medical conditions, a failed AC is a genuine medical risk. We treat every emergency call as time-sensitive.
Don't wait it out.
A failing AC working against a real problem turns a $300 fix into a $4,000 compressor replacement. Call us before it dies.
